Postgraduate Courses Overview

According to the World Health Organization, herbal medicine represents the primary health care modality for 75% of the world’s population. In Western countries there is now a growing number of consumers who are self-prescribing herbs for a wide range of health disorders. However, this self-prescribing is often ill advised and reflects the need for a wider range of health care professionals trained in offering sound advice on the use of herbs for common health issues.

The Australian College of Phytotherapy offers a state of the art, user-friendly post-graduate course in herbal medicine and was also instrumental in the development of two others that are now offered by the University of New England. The courses are open to students within Australia and from overseas. They cater for the widely different needs and available study time of busy professionals:

Practical Herbal Therapy — This course leads to the award of the Statement of Proficiency in Practical Herbal Therapy. In the USA the course is co-sponsored by Texas Chiropractic College which awards US-licensed graduates with a Certificate of Proficiency in Practical Herbal Therapy on successful completion of the course.

All three courses are offered by distance education and have largely been written by Associate Professor Kerry Bone, one of Australia’s leading medical herbalists. They are innovative, clinically-oriented programs which meet the needs of modern health care providers. The course material is based on cutting edge scientific, medical and herbal knowledge and provides students with the information, skills and capabilities to become competent herbal clinicians.
